Alberto Giacometti’s austere and dusty studio on the rue Hippolyte Maindron is central to the Swiss sculptor’s personal mythology. From his arrival in the winter of 1926 until his death in 1966, the artist remained in the same dilapidated, cave-like workshop whose modest and disordered character appeared a reflection of his own temperament. As a meeting point for the artists and authors of the day, the ramshackle studio complex at the fringes of Paris knew a cult status in the world of café conversation and avant-garde periodicals, and the photo essays, posthumous books and exhibitions devoted to the iconic studio have only reinforced 46 rue Hippolyte Maindron as ‘one of the key spaces of 20th century art’.
However, this focus on Giacometti has until now masked a rich and surprising history of the garden complex at the corner of the ‘rue Hippolyte’, and of the sculptors, painters and authors who also spent time there. For several years in the mid-20s, Bror Hjorth had his own cramped workshop under the stairs with neither running water nor electricity. During these formative years as a student and classmate of Giacometti, Hjorth lived in close quarters with a handful of international artists, such as Jean Fautrier and Dutch De Stijl artist Theo van Doesburg, who would go on to become some of the most prominent figures in the art of their own countries.
On April 14th, researcher and biographer of the Paris studio complex, James Chadwick, will give an online talk at the Bror Hjorth House focusing on Hjorth’s time, before Giacometti, at 46 rue Hippolyte Maindron. The talk will explore the history of this mythical address and introduce the life and early works of some of the artists with whom Hjorth shared his living space at a time when Paris was the international capital of modern art.

Under flera år i mitten av 1920-talet hade Bror Hjorth sin egen trånga verkstad på adressen, under trappan och utan varken rinnande vatten eller el. Under dessa år som student och klasskamrat till Giacometti bodde Hjorth i nära anslutning med en handfull internationella konstnärer, som Jean Fautrier och holländska De Stijl-konstnären Theo van Doesburg, som alla skulle bli framstående personerna i sina egna länders konsthistorier.

Föredraget kommer att utforska historien om denna mytiska adress och introducera liv och tidiga verk hos några av de konstnärer som Hjorth delade sitt bostadsområde med. Detta i en tid då Paris var den moderna konstens internationella huvudstad.
